Scott Pilgrim [comics]
Man…I know I’ve said it before, but I don’t think my heart has sung the way it does when I read a new Scott Pilgrim book. Volume 4 just came out, and what started off as a small story about listless romanticism of the mid-twenty-something Canadian slacker hipsters has turned into a very big story about the power of love and the fortitude needed to tackle life’s little challenges. The way that Bryan O’Malley externalizes internal combats that go on in our heads and hearts is both wacky and incredibly familiar…it’s as if all of us at one point imagined fighting our inner demons was like watching a cutscene of Ninja Gaiden or getting a job was like going up a level in experience points (or wait, was that just me?).
All of you should go grab Vol.’s 1-4 and make Bryan O’Malley like, totally rich and stuff. So he can buy pizza. Cuz I hear he really likes it* And all of you should relish the chance to read a story as touching and uproariously funny as Scott Pilgrim. It’ll keep your heart warm in the wintertime.
