The point of Zombies! [movies]
E, don’t you get it? Zombies are social commentary!!!! Like, of course a Zombie couldn’t take you in a fight, except for the fact that your inherently eeevil human nature would eventually insure your downfall! Man’s inhumanity to man! It’s deep! Ok, it’s not that deep!
Seriously though, zombies do create an excellent template for social commentary, and have repeatedly done so throughout the years. I say this in spite of the fact that Night of the Living Dead is objectively, the most boring film of all time.* Mike Nelson had it right when he said that Romero’s original vision for the film was to focus on the carpentry.
So, zombies: actually kind of awesome, but still a little overloved.
* Seriously, that movie is SO boring, although the ending is awesome. I say this as someone who grew up approximately a 1-minute walk from one of Romero’s old homes, whose mother went to school with Romero’s daughter, and grew up watching Chilly Billy Cardilly on television. Love for anything Pittsburgh-related should be ingrained in me.
