The Dark Knight - Opening Weekend! [UK movies]

By: Grimbil · July 26, 2008

Shocking as it may sound, we here in the UK were not privy to the glory that was Batman - The Dark Knight, until this weekend. Yes, our currency may be twice as valuable as yours, our beer may be better, and our football players aren’t all meatheads (for the most part), but despite all of these superior qualities, we got shafted with an extra week to wait for the Bat.

Unlike the horror stories I’ve read about people trying to get tickets in the US, here in London they have this sweet feature called “reserved seating”. It’s bloody brilliant, really. I actually got to the theatre 20 minutes late and took a leisurely stroll to my seat without missing a thing (except the Watchmen trailer, which I had been avoiding in order to see it in the theatre). It was in the Fifth row, but here they also don’t place seats 5 feet from the screen to make a couple extra bucks (or an extra pound - zing!), so it wasn’t a problem.

Best of all, finally seeing TDK allowed me to go back and read the other 50% of the blog entries posted over the last week here at the Geek Prospectus. I’d like to take a few moments now and respond to some of what’s been said here recently, but which I’ve only just now gone back and read.

E: I agree, it was a really really good movie. TDK definitely lived up to the hype, and it’s going to make ridiculous amounts of money when everything has settled. When the Joker went flying off the roof of the building, I actually yelled “NOOOOO!!!”, picturing the end of the first Batman movie with Nicholson’s Joker lying dead at the bottom of the bell tower. I’m glad they kept him around. However, they killed off Two Face, who has always been one of my favorite villains from the comics. On the plus side, there was a good reason, plot-wise, for him to die. I really liked what they did with Batman taking the blame in order to keep Dent’s reputation intact and let the city keep their hope alive. I can’t wait to see the director’s cut of this flick.

LD: LD is a hater.

  1. Batman could totally kick Spiderman’s ass.
  2. In Spiderman 2, Doc Oct wears these silly goggles to protect his eyes from the blazing light of his sun fusion thing. Funny tho, nobody else does….wouldn’t their eyes be horribly scarred by looking at it?
  3. Doc Oct says that the material he needs, tritium, is extremely rare, only 25 pounds of the stuff in the whole world. But actually, tritium is not uncommon, and is used all the time in luminescent exit signs, gauges, dials, watches, etc.
  4. When Peter calls Mary Jane to apologize for missing her performance, he puts a single coin into the payphone and dials 7 numbers. Every dummy knows a NYC payphone costs 50 cents and you have to dial 11 digits. I almost walked out of the theatre at that point.
  5. Superman is pants and Batman could kick his ass too.

SN: We need to see more of your artwork. Maybe we can start a new theme….we give you a series of words, you then draw a scene using those words as your influence. I’ll start. Three words: Groin, Kick, and O’Reilly. Go!

E (Part 2): Clearly Batman hates bush, he picked Harvey over Rachel. Also, I didn’t elect Bush, the Supreme Court appointed him.

On that last part - about picking Harvey over Rachel…No, he didn’t. He picked Rachel over Harvey, but the Joker mixed up the addresses. Batman thought he was going to save Rachel, not Harvey.

Ah ha! I guess Batman hates Gotham then. Unbelievable.
