Draft!: Star Wars, the Expanded Universe: Round 2 [draft]
LD: Rogue Squadron for gamecube. Also for the hoth level.LD: Rogue Squadron for gamecube (ed. note - this will include all three Rogue Squadrons. Also for the hoth level.
Grimbil: Ok, I’m going to date myself here, but X-Wing Series. This includes Tie Fighter and X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter. X-Wing came on in the early 90s, and dumped you right in the middle of a New Hope. A flight simulator following the plotline of Star Wars was a dream come true for all of us geeks out there. I spent HOURS running thru the different missions, trying to get the highest score possible on every mission.
Tie Fighter came out afterwards and started in the midst of Empire Strikes Back, except this time you were fighting for the Empire instead of against. It’s been hard to go back to the alliance ever since. And E, Tie Fighter actually includes a cameo from Thrawn! You also get to fly wingman for the big DV. Bad ass games, and the best reason to own a joystick for those old PCs we had back then![]()
JC: That’s where I was headed next. The early versions were awesome flight simulator. On of the few times that owning a low-end Mac really sucked.
E: I never got into the X-wing series. But I do hate flight simulators, so y’knw.
JC: But you shot down Tie-Fighters, damnit!
Grimbil: Surprise, Surprise, E hates awesome things.
E: Guys, I don’t simulate. I just go out and fly the real deal.
Y: Grimbil, that’s an unbelievable pick. Truly inspired. I’m jealous.
For my next pick, I’m going with Star Wars: Dark Forces. Basically a Doom clone, this was the first time I got to shoot storm troopers. And the main character (Kyle Katarn) lasted, starring in a host of games that included the first Jedi Knight/Outcast/Academy game.
SN: In staying with the video game theme, I’m going to take Masters of Teras Kasi for playstation. The game wasn’t very good, but the Star Wars universe clearly needed a fighting game in which one could beat Leia senseless with Chewbacca.
LD: Ass! That was the only other bit of EU inolvement I have!
SN: Another brilliant pick by me. Perhaps youd like to trade me a third round pick and cash in exchange for Teras Kasi?
LD: No, I’m good. I’ll just go right ahead and pick this picture I drew of E making out with Porkins.
JC: I’ll take the Clone Wars cartoon. No, not the movie, you douchebags. I’m taking 20 chapter Cartoon Network series that aired in 2003. The series, which was to serve as a link between Episode II and Episode III gave hope to those disappointed by the puerile nature of Episode I (even though I didn’t mind it all that much) and the ultimately bland Episode II (thanks for mailing it in Hayden) that the conclusion to the Star Wars saga would live up to the still lofty expectations.
While the animation was very CN-ish, the story, pacing and action all exceeded expectations and is one of the few bright spots of the Prequel Trilogy media.
LD: You know, I heard all the hype about the series, so I bought it on DVD (which really took a lot of pride swallowing), and I wasn’t blown away. It’s got some cool moments, and it wears some neat influences on its sleeve, but I felt like I was watching a bunch of half-formed ideas rather than anything satisfying.
E: I am picking the Endor Holocaust, because it led to the greatest picture of a burning ewok ever, which I present here:
It’s merely a theory, and not canon officially, but the theory is that when the second death star was blown up above the forest moon, that all the debris and wreckage fell to the ground destroying ewok villages and leaving thousands of ewoks dead.
LD: I was watching RotJ this weekend, and I am still pissed about something: It’s NOT EFFING ENDOR. It is the FOREST MOON of Endor. ahem.
Also, I am aware that in the EU, there is a canonical story where Dack is revealed to have been a force sensitive. That pisses me off, because we know his name should be spelled Dak.

I don’t believe the actual planet Endor is ever seen on screen.
Star Wars Masters of Teras Kasi had two things going for it: Slave Leia kicking ass, and physics based hit targets. Instead of the standard ‘react this way for any high kick’ there was real-time physics mojo that would make the toon react realistically.
