GEEK OUT!
It’s been months since we did one of these, but it’s actually one of the blogs better features. So, without further ado, here’s what us geeks is diggin’:
LD) I’m taking John Hodgman’s More Information Than You Require. It’s the sequel to the hands-down funniest book I’ve ever read. The Areas of My Expertise created a hazy but brilliant alternate history of the world full of spacebound hobos, gentlemen thieves who use ferrets to con the unsuspecting, and arcane end times prophecies. More Information Than You Require takes that world and fleshes it out while Hodgman lords his newfound wealth and minor fame over the reader. I’ve rarely read a book where every page makes me laugh, but Hodgman manages. Highlights to date include the list of U.S. Presidents who had hooks for hands, a comprehensive list of television’s wacky neighbors, and the sure-fire gambling strategy for Star Wars Slot Machines.

E) Spacehog “In the Meantime” - does everyone remember this song? I actually bought the album, Resident Alien, which from what I remember had like one other decent song on it. Nevermind the fact that I have no real idea what they’re saying in the chorus, or the song as a whole is based around a cheesy bass guitar riff, that chorus riff was what vicious, power pop was made of back in the late 90’s or whenever this came out. This song rules.
JC) Video game companies trying to create good games. While Gears of War has a laughably bad storyline (more on that another time), it is the latest in games that are giving it the ole college try. Dead Space has great mechanics, but screws the pooch on the last level, Mega Man 9 is a great old school platformer that gets ridiculously easy in the end. Fallout 3 may destroy your job, marriage, health, but it is a great game.

Y) Invincible. I was blown away by the first hardcover edition, and can’t wait to get the follow ups. While I love the comics that deal with the love/death/universe, this one is a breath of fresh air as an old-fashioned super hero comic, with a couple of awesome twists. Iconic.

SN) I would have taken Lego Star Wars for Wii a few days ago, but then I got hooked on Bloodsworth by Tim Junkin, the true story of the first man ever exonerated by DNA evidence. The guy, who’s from near me, was sentenced to death for the rape and murder of a 9-year-old girl and spent 9 years in prison before being set free. I’m looking to finish the book in 3 days, which I never do, but it’s just that gripping.
