Aniversary: The Geekiest Thing(s) N8 Has Ever Done

By: N8 · November 18, 2008

[E writes:] So for today, we’re each going to be posting a story of the geekiest thing we’ve ever done. It’ll be full of shame, humor, and awesomeness. So enjoy, and cheers to a year!

[N8 thinks:] Shit. I love this idea, but shit.

First, there are too many things to choose from. I played Dungeons & Dragons before it was even know to be uncool, chased that pastime by spending the GDP of a small country on Magic: The Gathering (even after I could drive), gave up a mediocre wrestling career in Jr. High for policy debate, and ultimately picked a job after law school that wouldn’t interfere too much with my ability to read fantasy novels, play video games, and generally get hot and bothered each time a new (and usually disappointing) book or movie comes out that involves vampires. Picking was difficult, because I believe that true geeks are not born but bread, cultivating their passions over years and moving fluidly with their interests until they look back and realize they know more about Buffy and the mating habits of zombies than anyone ought. If you realize and decide to revel in it, we welcome you. If not, you probably bought some kind of out-door equipment or joined a gym and may spend years wearing a mask of adulthood and respectability, while a part of you cries out when you pass the comic book stand. I’d feel bad for people like you if they didn’t generally get to have more sex than the passionate Star Wars fan.

In short, I was asked to pick a moment to epitomize a Life of Geek, and I’m not sure I agree with my choice, though you all probably will:

In the last year, I started a romantic relationship with someone I met on World of Warcraft. I submit that it is all the geekier because it happened not in the distant past, but about a year ago. And I should say, not for myself, but for the young lady who remains a good friend, that the relationship itself was not particularly unusual in character, despite the manner in which it got off the ground. That said, I think this love connection is a fitting moment among many, because the bald fact is that I started dating someone I met as a Tauren Druid cartoon.

Allow me to chime in: HOLY FUCK.

Kudos for manning up and admitting to that one.

  2. E says:

wait, the tone of this entry sounds like this is no longer going on? Is this the case?

  3. N8 says:

Thanks, LD. I knew it was the true answer when I thought “I wonder whether this is TOO geeky even for the self-declared geeks of this blog.”

Yes, E, it’s not going on any more, though we’re still in touch. We broke up because of distance (she lives out West) and I’m here in DC. She did visit, and I visited her.

  4. E says:

Sorry to hear that man, I remember hearing about it on the ride up to CT.

  5. N8 says:

Thanks — It’s never fun when something ends, but it was mutually decided and ultimately for the best, I think we both agree now, just because the distance wasn’t fun and it’s hard for either person to uproot their life to move. Classic long distance relationship dilemma, but we’re still in touch and increasingly good friends.

I just learned what a Tauren Druid is.

    Wow.

  7. Dutch says:

Wait, does that mean that it’s the geekiest thing I’ve ever done also? =)

  8. Dutch says:

Just a word in my defense, it was a conversation about Shakespeare (among other things) that started the attration on my end…not the Tauren Druid in question.

  9. N8 says:

Haha, yes, I know. And I wouldn’t want to imply otherwise.

As for whether it was the geekiest thing you’ve ever done, I can’t speak to that. =)
